2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Evangel Christian Academy completed the 2016 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-2 region record and a third place finish in Class AA region one, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Evangel Christian Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Escambia Academy by a score of 49-6. It marked the first time since the 2011 season that the Lions qualified for the playoffs. The Lions have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. The Lions had some tough luck last season as four of their seven losses were by less than eight points. Since 2010, Evangel Christian Academy has gone a combined 26-46. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class AA over the past seven seasons. Over the past 16 seasons, Evangel Christian Academy has not won much with a record of 51-111. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class AA and 36th in the AISA. The Lions have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. The Lions are led by head coach Andy Whatley who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-36 over the past five seasons at Evangel Christian Academy. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Whatley. Coach Whatley's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 33-75 (30.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Whatley's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times . The Evangel Christian Academy Lions will play in Class AA region one during the 2017 season. The Lions will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. Senior Dee Smith returns after rushing for 1,424 yards on 181 carries and scoring 16 touchdowns. The defense returns Junior tackle Ethan Johnson who got in on 5.5 sacks for 38 yards in losses last season. The Lions open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Fort Dale Academy on Friday, August 25 at Fort Dale Stadium. Last year the Fort Dale Academy Eagles finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class AAA region two. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs to Glenwood School by a score of 35-14. Evangel Christian Academy and Fort Dale Academy have met a total of 4 times on the football field.
